pdmcdan.com Hosted Electronic Mail
I am setting up email accounts for the members
of the McDaniel family. This way, all family related mail will use
permanent addresses hosted from this cite. For example, I should be
able to be reached at any point in the future at patrick@pdmcdan.com.
OK, to the business at hand. If you are a
member of the family or a close friend and desire a pdmcdan.com email
address, you have two options;
- Option one : I can create a virtual account which
automatically forwards email received at pdmcdan.com to an existing
account.
- Option two : I can create a real account. In this case,
you will have to setup your email handler program (e.g., MS Outlook)
to retrieve the email directly. Easy to do; I can provide
instructions.
Whichever option you choose, send email the
following to
patrick@pdmcdan.com:
- Your name (e.g., Liam McDaniel)
- Your desired account name (e.g., liam@pdmcdan.com)
- Your password (e.g., gocats)
- If you choose to have and auto forward account (option one), the
email address you wish to have the mail forwarded to. (e.g.,
pdmcdan@eecs.umich.edu).
There are two ways to access your PDMCDAN mail account; via a web
browser like Internet Explorer or Netscape, or through your regular
email program. I suggest you it up through your regular email
program, so you get your family mail at the same time you get your
other mail.
PDMCDAN via a web browser.
- On a web browser, open this URL: http://mail.pdmcdan.com This will
take you to a log in screen at DotEasy.
- Enter your full email address, like sean@pdmcdan.com
- Enter your password.
- Press enter, or click the go button.
It should take you to a web interface for reading, composing and
sending mail. There are also a number of preferences and options that
can be set at this screen, such as changing your password, etc.
PDMCDAN via a regular email program.
There are a variety of email programs that let you manage a number
of email accounts, and even a number of different users (or
"identities"). These include Eudora, Outlook and Netscape Mail. I will
walk you through how to set this up in Outlook (or Outlook Express),
but the steps should be basically the same for most of the other email
programs.
First, the key information ...This is a POP3
email account, and not IMAP.
| The INCOMING MAIL server is: |
mail.pdmcdan.com |
| The OUTGOING MAIL (SMTP) is: |
mail.pdmcdan.com
|
| The account name is: |
(You get this from Pat, note though the name has to be
"name"@pdmcdan.com, and not just "name")
|
| Password: |
You get this from Pat)

OK, on to setting up a PDMCDAN account on Outlook. These
instructions assume that you are already using Outlook for your other
email accounts.
- Open up Outlook, just as you would for reading your mail.
- Under the tools menu select "Accounts".
- On the right hand side of the Internet Accounts Box select
Add?Mail
- Enter your full name in the Display Name Box and click Next.
- Select "I already have an email address that I'd like to use", and
in the box enter your pdmcdan address, such as sean@pdmcdan.com. Click
Next.
- Choose POP3 as your server type, and enter mail.pdmcdan.com for
both Incoming and Outgoing mail servers. Click Next.
- Under account name enter your full pdmcdan address, such as
liam@pdmcdan.com, and enter your password as supplied by Pat. Make
sure the "Remember password box is selected." Do not select the Secure
Password Authentication. Click Next.
- Click Finish and you are done.
If you complete this, you should return to the Internet Accounts
Box. If you want to check the setting, you can select the
mail.pdmcdan.com account from the list, and click properties.
If you have any trouble setting up your account, drop me note at
sean@pdmcdan.com, and I will try to help. Make sure first though that
you have an account and password from Pat already.
